What is Redeye Magazine?

The semi quarterly Redeye Magazine was first published in 2003 by Engine Comics after it was realised the exploding UK independent comics scene needed a focal point, a unifying voice that would allow all creators an equal platform. That voice has become a rallying cry for not just UK comics but independent creators everywhere. Attracting growing interest from international readers, and a page count increasing each issue, Redeye features a news section, full page previews of upcoming titles, reports on conventions, exhibitions and events from around the world. With interviews with industry veterans and newcomers, articles on the past and future of comics, plus a massive reviews section, Redeye has been described as an essential and vital read.

I already read Comics International, Comics Journal and Wizard, why should I read Redeye?

Redeye is the ONLY magazine dedicated to the independent comics press, with the focus on UK creators. We cover comics, news and events that just simply wouldn't show up on other magazines' radar, due to lack of interest, knowledge or distribution. We'll introduce you to creators you've never heard of, who will be the big names of tommorrow, and you'll be glad we did. You won't find the latest big budget movie or hot new X title on our cover, because frankly why bother regurgitating what everyone else is doing? And whereas many magazines are full of adverts every second page, each page of Redeye is jam packed with information. You won't be able to read us cover to cover in twenty minutes, guaranteed.

Can I buy Redeye at my local store?

Redeye has been distributed through Diamond to direct sales comic shops from issue two, as well as the Borders Bookstore chain and through our online mail ordering system. In many cases though, if you don't see it in your shop, ask for it, or contact us directly.

What's the difference between the print version of Redeye and the downloadable CBZ version?

The CBZ version has no news section but some colour content to make up for it, and in future issues, some bonus easter eggs. That's pretty much it. But you can't take a CBZ file on the bus with you, or read it on the toilet. Unless you have a laptop, or a very, very long power cable…

Hey, I love what you crazy cats are doing. Can I subscribe?

Certainly. For details depending on where you live, go to the SUBSCRIPTIONS page.

What do you consider news?

In news magazines such as Wizard , Comics International and Comics Journal , they cover mostly mainstream publishers, the likes of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and 2000AD . With Redeye we give the same amount of focus, detail and integrity to every mini comic, indie self published comic, website or event. If you're making a comic, that's news that should be shared. And for us to know about it, you need to send us a press release, a template of which you can find HERE . You should also join our news group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/REDEYEMAGAZINE . News is really the most important part of the magazine. Redeye exists to serve a purpose: the promotion and support of independent comics. We can only do that if we hear directly from YOU about YOUR projects, YOUR latest title, the latest endeavour and labour of love. From the smallest leaflet to the slickest US sized epic, from the smallest artists blog to the biggest fans website. All are given equal voice. So take advantage of that and send us your information, but be sure to include the essential information.

I want to show previews of my artwork to help sell it, what should I send you?

A limited number of special pages are available for creators to preview their upcoming titles, these are called eyecandy pages. Using a page of artwork, eyecandy works as a low-rate advert as well as a teaser for the reader, therefore making it more likely they'll search out your title, similar to the full page ads that bigger companies have in Diamond's 500 page Previews catalogue. Eyecandy pages are usually very popular and once announced spaces are booked within days. These are only £30 each. Art needs to be b/w interior art only and be at 400dpi for printing.

Can I send you an advert instead?

Again only a set number of ad spaces are available per issue, so be sure to book your space ASAP before they go. All ads need to be camera ready and at 400dpi. Rates are:

Full colour back page (12.1x 8.5 inches): £150
Full colour horizontal half page, inside back cover (5.1x7.4 inches): £75
Full-page b/w interior (12.1x 8.5 inches): £60
Half page b/w horizontal interior ( 5.1x7.4 inches ) £40

How do I get my comic/website reviewed in Redeye?

Simply send a copy or the url to the CONTACT address along with your own contact and retail information. Once we review you'll want other people to buy a copy from you, so you need to be sure to include contact details for yourself, how much copies will be, and where it is available from.

Are you looking for writers and/or reviewers?

Absolutely. All contributors to Redeye do so for the love of the medium and we welcome others with that passion. If you want to review for us, contact me with a sample.

What is The Owl In Daylight blog for?

The http://emperorowl.blogspot.com/ is simply to review titles that for whatever reason, we have no space for in the normal magazine, are titles outside our remit (IE mainstream Marvel or DC titles) or for larger feature reviews

How is it decided what titles would be reviewed in the mag and online?

We chose a wide selection of titles for the mag to give the best cross section of the UK scene. Each and every title is a worthy as the others.

Will this blog replace the printed reviews in future Redeye issues?

No, they'll both compliment each other.

What makes Owl in Daylight any different than any other review site?

Well, each title reviewed will have sample artwork and cover art next to it. In many cases you'll get multiple reviewers on one title. And they are substantial reviews, not a 50 word soundbite. You'll also be able to leave comments on each review.

I've a 5000 word essay on a creators run. Are you interested?

Again yes. We actually have assignments for writers to do overviews of certain creators and books. In some cases we can arrange direct contact with these creators. Again contact me above.

Where does Owl In Daylight come from?

Well, glad you asked. It was the last book Philip K Dick was working on, and apparently comes from a Southern States saying, about being blind in daylight, or to be confused by something obvious. Nothing at all related to comics, but I'm something of a fan. And it sounds cool.
